College Now Classes - Spring 2024

Spring Registration is Happening NOW!

Port Richmond High School has a long standing and robust partnership with Kingsborough Community College’s College Now program. College Now is a wonderful opportunity for high school students to receive FREE college credit by taking a College Now course while still in high school. College Now credits transfer seamlessly into most colleges. College Now courses are open to most sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students do need to meet minimum requirements for cumulative average and/or test scores, but most of our students qualify. We are offering 5 Classes for the Spring, 2024 semester. Course Descriptions:

BA 11: Business Administration: Students are introduced to the dynamic world of business through lectures, discussions, case studies, readings and the Internet. The course focuses on the fundamentals of management, marketing, finance and business in the global environment, with special attention to the issues involved in entrepreneurship, franchising and formulating a business.

COM 11: Communications: Communications have had a global impact on everyone's life, personal and professional. This course will provide an introduction to all areas of mass communications and media literacy through the study of radio, television, film, newspapers, magazines, books and the Internet.

BSS 1: Behavioral and Social Sciences: The Individual and His/Her World: Issues of current significance are studied using concepts and methodologies of the behavioral and social sciences, especially sociology and psychology. Coursework is brought to life by relating the topics of violence, authority, work, leisure, popular culture and peer pressure to course readings, discussions, films and students' life experiences.

HUM 1: Humanities: Through the exploration of modern century literature, drama, art, film, poetry and music, this course places developments in the Humanities into historical context and illustrates the continuity of culture.

SD10/SD11: Student Development College Planning and Career Planning

This course helps students realistically assess their academic and career options upon graduating from high school. Topics include applying and adjusting to college, selecting a major, study habits, time management and financial planning. Through self-assessment inventories, job-seeking techniques and labor-market research, students explore careers in relation to their abilities, interests and choice of college. Topics include the nature of work, contemporary changes in careers and work ethic, changing lifestyles, educational requirements for particular jobs, goal setting and decision making.
